Anesthesia of silver catfish with eugenol: time of induction, cortisol response and sensory analysis of fillet Ciência Rural
Cunha,Mauro Alves da; Zeppenfeld,Carla Cristina; Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Loro,Vania Lucia; Fonseca,Milene Braga da; Emanuelli,Tatiana; Veeck,Ana Paula de Lima; Copatti,Carlos Eduardo; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The aim of this study was to identify the time of anesthetic induction and recovery of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) exposed to eugenol. It was also determined the efficacy of the anesthetic as a stress reducing agent and performed a sensory analysis of the fillets from fish exposed to this substance. The silver catfish were exposed to air for 1min to carry out biometry, and blood was collected at 0, 1 and 4 hours later. Eugenol can be used in the range of 20-50mg L-1 for anesthetic induction in silver catfish, and recovery time from anesthesia was not affected by eugenol concentration. The control group showed significantly higher cortisol levels 4 hours after biometry than at time zero. Fish anesthetized with eugenol (50mg L-1) presented significantly...

Antifungal properties of clove oil (Eugenia caryophylata) in sugar solution BJM
Núñez,Lidia; D'Aquino,Miguel; Chirife,Jorge.
The effect of temperature, concentration and contact time on the fungicidal effect of clove oleoresin dispersed in a concentrated sugar solution at 21 and 37ºC, and clove oleoresin at 0.2 to 0.8% (v/v) was studied. The test microorganisms were Candida albicans, Penicillium citrinum, Aspergillus niger and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The fungicidal effect was enhanced at 37ºC; at this temperature short contact times (e.g. 1 min.) were enough to eliminate a microbial inoculum of 10(6) c.f.u./ml of C. albicans. Although clove oleoresin caused important lethal effect, P. citrinum and A. niger were more resistant. After 60 minutes, clove oleoresin dispersed (0.4% v/v) in concentrated sugar solution caused a 99.6% reduction of the initial population (10(6)...

Changes in potato tuber sugar metabolism in response to natural sprout suppressive compounds Agronomy
Santos, Mirelle Nayana de Sousa; Araujo, Fernanda Ferreira de; Lima, Paula Cristina Carvalho; Costa, Lucas Cavalcante da; Finger, Fernando Luiz.
The increased demand for potato by the Brazilian processing industry requires long term refrigerated storage, but after a few months, natural dormancy ends, and sprouts start to grow. Thus, sprout inhibitors are necessary to reduce the rate of growth and allow further storage. The purpose of research described here was to determine the effects clove and menthol essential oils have on the inhibition of sprout growth in non-dormant ‘Asterix’ tubers. Both eugenol and menthol treatments reduced the rate of sprout growth during storage at 8oC for up to 50 days. Eugenol and menthol essential oils diminished the rate of accumulation of reducing sugar, which are responsible for browning of French fries. Color after frying was within acceptable levels when the...

Clove oil as anaesthetic for juveniles of matrinxã Brycon cephalus (Gunther, 1869) Ciência Rural
Inoue,Luis Antônio Kioshi Aoki; Santos Neto,Cristiano dos; Moraes,Gilberto.
Many chemicals have been used as anaesthetics in fish farms and fish biology laboratories to keep the fish immobilized during handling procedures and to prevent accidents and animal stress. In Brazil, tricaine methane sulfonate (MS 222), quinaldine sulfate, benzocaine, and phenoxyethanol are the most common fish anaesthetics used to prevent fish stress during handling, but many side effects such as body and gill irritations, corneal damage and general risks of intoxication have been reported. Clove oil is a natural product proposed as an alternative fish anaesthetic by many researchers and it has been used in many countries with great economic advantages and no apparent toxic properties. In this work, we assessed the suitability of clove oil to...

Effects of clove oil on the stress response of matrinxã (Brycon cephalus) subjected to transport Acta Amazonica
Inoue,Luís Antônio Kioshi Aoki; Afonso,Luís Orlando B.; Iwama,George K.; Moraes,Gilberto.
Fish transport is one of the most stressful procedures in aquaculture facilities. The present work evaluated the stress response of matrinxã to transportation procedures, and the use of clove oil as an alternative to reduce the stress response to transport in matrinxã (Brycon cephalus). Clove oil solutions were tested in concentrations of 0, 1, 5 and 10 mg/L during matrinxã transportation in plastic bags, supplied with water and oxygen as the usual field procedures in Brazil. Clove oil reduced some of the physiological stress responses (plasma cortisol, glucose and ions) that we measured. The high energetic cost to matrinxã cope with the transport stress was clear by the decrease of liver glycogen after transport. Our results suggest that clove oil (5...
